Here Is The News...
I've been invited to work on an exciting prototype for the BBC. I can't say anymore at present as I've signed an NDA, but I am looking forward to looking into some interesting navigation concepts.
Also...
I'm currently working with two LA companies,
Furlined and
Streetgang Films, creating sites for their respective promo and commercial production companies...
And Finally...
I've got a blog, might not be to interesting to you, but gives me an output, and stops me filling the site with my brain dump...

Planit
Formed in 1992, Planit is a project-based event organiser who specialise in the spectacular, providing sensational settings for large events in central London. Working with NB:Studio I designed a site that promoted the array of their offering while working in parallel with NB as they developed collateral for the company.

FinalCut
FinalCut have been a client of mine for over 5 years, I designed their last site and content management system. They have since started using Wiredrive (an industry standard in digital video delivery) and wanted to integrate this system as well as designing a new site.
A number of technical challenges resulted in an elegant solution where Flash was combined with Ajax, overlaying movies on top of a Flash website... Have a look and spot the join :)

Hook Films
I was approached just before Christmas to create the site for Hook Films, a young production company offering a dynamic alternative to the establishment.
Handed a DVD sleeve and a comp slip of the new identity, I created a site which kept the simplicity of the identity, whilst giving an elegance of interaction from information heavy pages, to pages showcasing the directors' clips.

Just back from honeymoon in Bali, and all refreshed and working on projects for Lucky Voice, Intersection Magazine, FinalCut and working in collaboration with both madeThought and NB:Studio on some digital projects.
UPDATE: Lucky Voice is one of the first and biggest projects I landed prior to starting up mimeArtist, and is the backbone of my first years business...

Scirocco Studios
Scirocco Studios is a moving creative space. Touring four of the UK's most creative cities on a whistlestop schedule, a pop-up exhibition brings the spirit of the Volkswagen Scirocco to life in unexpected forms. I had under two weeks to create the site from the ground up, but am pleased with the results...

Me, an author!
I've had various pieces of interaction design featured in the icon series of books for Taschen, but for the latest book I was actually asked to write something!
"how important is an online
portfolio for a start up" was apt, and I hope I had something useful to say.
Embarrassingly, I found that I got the lowest mark of the whole year for my dissertation in my degree at Ravensbourne, but I'm happy how this turned out, shows what difference a decade makes!

Wave
I created the Wave web site over three years ago, since then they've continued to go from strength to strength picking up D&AD gold pencils etc etc, and are now opening a studio in Amsterdam. I'm currently in the process of adapting their site so there is an Amsterdam base in addition to the London studio, and also allowing for multi-lingual support through the
CMS I built for them.

Studio aka
I've just launched
Studio aka, I've been lucky enough to have worked with them on a number of projects with them, one of which - 'Compaq Bird', won a silver at the D&AD awards. I also built their original site back in 1999, and I'm back again.
Some interesting stuff about this project is the way in which it detects the users screen dimensions, and the number of images to be shown and loads the relevent size, and with a clever bit of programming you see the images at their best.

I Should be so Lucky, er... Lucky, Lucky, Lucky !
I'm also working with Lucky Voice on a new project. Lucky Voice is nothing like the karaoke night at your local pub. This is karaoke in your own private room (or pod) with over 6,000 classic songs, delicious food and drink at the touch of a button.

I've just finished work on a prototype for Escape Studios, which called upon rapid prototyping skills for a quick turnaround which is both a speciality, and also somthing I enjoy at mimeArtist.

The 'mill' meaning
of Christmas
I came up with the idea of The 'mill' meaning of christmas, and designed and built a number of applications that allowed Mill staff to request a unique link to be emailed to them to enter their details. In turn a simple mechanism allowed one user to check the messages before publishing, all with minimum effort from staff at a very busy time of the year for them.
The result - Each message was turned into a snowflake, with could be sent out to individuals or en mass... There was such a good response that I had to add a search facility... have a play!

Joyeux Noël !
Blimey! Isn't it cold ! Just got back from posting off all my Christmas cards... and thought I'd say Merry Xmas to those not on my list... It's been a busy 8 weeks since starting up, with new sites for
Soho House London,
Babington House,
Café Boheme,
BKB and
Cecconi's... That may seem like a lot, but they are all based on the same interface, which I guess is the point!
I'm busy preparing a special project for The Mill which will be launched this week, and looking forward to a new project for NB:Studio after the break!

I drink your milkshake !
For five years I was joint owner / director / washer upper / worrier at Engage and built a studio respected by its peers. It was fun, hard work and at often scary, and I learned a lot. Along the way, I've worked on interesting projects, and collaborated with and continue to work with the best graphic design companies in the world.
People say the internet allows you to work anywhere, I'm allowing it to give me the flexibility that gives me time for R+D which has always been important to my work ethic, while still creating great work for my clients.
Yours sincerely, James Stone

3.The Lucky Voice project was in two stages, the first as shown in fig. 1 is the player, we wanted to see if we could recreate the experience of karaoke at home, at karaoke bars the most sophisticated systems are usually dual screen... but my solution enables one person to sing while another browses thousands of tracks without disturbing the vocalist. The system allows for the user to search and add tracks to the current party and also employs a drag and drop facility when the user can simply drag a track out of the playlist to remove it
The second stage was all getting people to use this great system, working closely with Lucky Voice and their web developers who created a social environment for people to create parties, I was given the job to translate the Lucky Voice brand online to an ajax environment.
The site was invite only, but now open to everyone!...

3.An Affectionately Regarded Product
Created with
NB:Studio, this is a site for their client
VGL, a leading specialist in screen and digital print. The service, Surface
View searches out dramatic images that lend themselves to home or commercial interiors.
We created a flash environment based on a room set, with each section taking a different place in the area; users can browse the collections, view them in-situ, and then customise them using their own dimensions. They are then sent an email showing visually showing their specification and Surface View then liaising with them to make it a reality
SurfaceView is constantly developing, and mimeArtist has recently launched phase 2 with new products, and new improved customisation tools.
Surface
View has just been featured in Creative Review's The Annual (May 2008)

Image is Everything!
The Mill have been a client of mine for nearly 10 years, from their very first site, to a design in-house, when I helped run the interactive lab there for two years to when I developed this latest version at Engage, and continue to look after at mimeArtist. I've also been involved in creating some microsites for them, including
The 'mill' meaning of ChristmasThe site works to fit around how The Mill works as a company, with different workflows coming together to create a site that is updated almost everyday.

Bodysong
Working with film director
Simon Pummell I created the online version of his film, Bodysong, a film of mans life made up from stock footage. The site allows you to fly through and find out the story behind every clip.
The project won a BAFTA award for interaction design, yes that is my chubby face in that photo!

Saturday
I've worked with Saturday on a number of sites, including
H&M, and new fashion chain
COS. So it was only natural that their site would follow.
The site allows the user to see the work as large and clearly as possible thanks to a system that works out the best layout for the both images and navigational items on screen at any one time.

This architecture site put simply is a tool that allows the visitor to either browse, or they can type in search terms and watch the items animate and dynamically show the results data, keystroke by keystroke.

1. The world of fashion moves so quickly that this campaign site is not online anymore :(
2. Barber Osgerby has the ability to style each page however they like, but they seem to just like white :)
3. The site has a bounty of great imagery updated in-house
5. Lola was a really enjoyable job to work on, given free reign allowed for a unique online experience
1.
H&M - Fashion 8
Fashion 8 was a campaign for H&M, through
Saturday-LondonThe build included liaising with H&M's online department to integrate the site into their existing framework. Key components of this site were the navigation items blowing onto screen letter by letter like autumn leaves.
Sadly like a lot of fashion the site was only online for 8 weeks or so, thus no link is available.

BarberOsgerby
This is version 2 of the site I've created for BarberOsgery, the partner company of
Universal Design Studio The site allows the user to simply view all their products, simple and elegantly, the user can browse the site, or they can type in search terms to narrow down the list of results, all without leaving the page.

Soho House
Towards the end of my time at Engage I designed all the current online Soho House private members clubs. These have included High Road House, Shoreditch House, Electric House, Soho House New York, Cafe Boheme, Cecconi's.
The sites show last minute booking offers, and the ability to view the latest menus from their restaurants, which are updated daily by Soho House staff.
There are too many to list here, but one of my favourites, and where I hold most of my meetings is

5.
Lola
Lola is a post production house based in London, a simple interaction device of a pack of cards was given a little twist.
The site allows the visitor to go backwards and forwards through the work, and play videos within the site.
The biggest technical achievement was an intelligent loading system whereby the site would start to load images wherever you were in the stack, and then go back and find the next images once the ones in view were downloaded. This loading device was further developed on
SurfaceView www.lola-post.com

Not too many on here, as need to get some work done occasionally, and sometimes a walk or simply not looking at web sites is the best inspiration!
